When great people are working towards similar missions, it only makes sense to align, collaborate and work together on those common goals. This is how we at GE Lighting see our partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland and around the country. Our team is proud to support the Boys & Girls Clubs’ mission to champion academic success and healthy lifestyles, as well as build character and increase citizenship efforts of our young people.

BRIGHTENING HOLIDAYS: INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY AT NELA PARK, December 2017

GE Lighting celebrated International Volunteer Day alongside the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland, specifically the Franklin D. Roosevelt and King Kennedy Clubs. To truly brighten the holidays for these children, there of course needed to be some preparation by the GE “holiday elves”. Employees generously purchased and donated gifts for 100 children and brought their holiday spirit to work as they wrapped gifts together as a team. As part of the final celebration on December 5, 13 GE Volunteers painted laser cut ornaments and enjoyed pizza with the children! As the children departed, they had the unique opportunity to view the Nela Park Holiday display which was open to the public for the first time in nearly 60 years.

STEM-A-PALOOZA, March 2017

In the first year of GE’s established partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland, GE Lighting hosted 17 clubs from northeast Ohio at the first annual STEM-A-Palooza at Nela Park. More than 150 children between the ages of six and thirteen, visited the 10th grade site of MC2 STEM High School. They explored six different STEM and health stations: Bikes as Energy, The Mobile Fab Lab, exploring LED light bulbs, creating launchers and yoga. Twenty GE Volunteers donated more than 60 volunteer hours for this event in which they spent time sharing their passion for innovation while engaging with the children, educating them on various STEM topics.

MC2 STEM HIGH SCHOOL

MC2 STEM High School, established in 2008, is an innovative school within the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. GE Lighting is a proud, founding partner of MC2 STEM High School. Nela Park, GE Lighting's world headquarters in East Cleveland, Ohio, and the first industrial park in the country, is host to the nation's first known high school embedded on a corporate campus. This year-round, project-based, multi-campus school is graduating students at an average of 96 percent per year and is doing so through its hands-on, real-world curriculum, seven core design principles, and its established partnerships, including a partnership with GE Lighting.

GE employees are passionate about supporting youth and have given more than an average of 2,140 hours of service annually to the students since the partnership began. Volunteers from early career professionals to senior leaders, in all functions, serve as mentors, buddies, tutors and instructors to the students through a variety of programs. GE volunteerism includes, but is not limited to, tutoring, lunches with GE Lighting leadership, career roundtables, life skills seminars, internships, capstone development and support and the largest of the programs, the Buddy Program.

STEM BUDDY PROGRAM

In the STEM Buddy Program, each student or a small group of students are paired with an employee or two who serve as the students’ mentor throughout the year. Buddies meet twice a month for a half hour and discuss everything from career interests and hobbies to sports and university. The program provides students a chance to get advice, network and practice their communications skills.

CAPSTONE ENGAGEMENT

The Grow to Win capstone is an example of GE involvement in the capstone planning process and execution. Every quarter MC2 STEM staff plan a new trans-disciplinary project for the students to engage in and learn from and in each of these projects, GE team members work to provide real-world problems or technology innovations that can support the content.

In the Grow to Win capstone, students discovered how humans interact with nature in urban ecosystems. The goal was for them to understand the terms sustainable and efficient to apply them to designing improved urban communities and environments. Students researched green building techniques, alternative lighting, growth options and alternate energy. As a class, students collaborated in both science and humanities classes to draw parallels between physical and social emotional growth within themselves, societal growth within their communities, and biological growth within the environment. The capstone goal is to build and present for an end-of-quarter Exhibition Night to present their ideas to corporations that have the financial means to make an impact on their community.

The GE team, while supporting the project in numerous ways, mainly engaged in engineering class. Engineers volunteered their time to help the students design planter boxes that would support external manipulation to drive growth internally. The engineers also educated students on LED, Bluetooth and Arduino technology which they could use to control variables within the planter boxes. This project was a great way to bring GE’s horticulture technology along with engineering expertise to the classroom.

AMAZON ALEXA SKILLS GROUP

Bringing real-world projects is one of the key components of GE Lighting’s partnership with MC2 STEM. This year, students have worked with Amazon Alexa and the c by GE Sol in the inaugural Alexa Skills group. Led by Lighting’s Connected Home team members, students worked in the school’s Raspberry Pi lab, that was donated by GE, learning new computer software applications like Python and Codecademy with the goal being a new skill for Alexa. This pilot group and future groups will continue developing their logic and Alexa skills coding techniques.

BUCYRUS TEAM SUPPORTS EDUCATION THROUGH JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT

The Bucyrus Lamp Plant team is proud to engage with local students annually through Junior Achievement, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating youth in topics such as finance, work readiness, and entrepreneurship. Volunteers teach the students about economics and the importance of family and jobs.

In addition to volunteering in the classrooms, the Bucyrus volunteers host students and their teachers in the plant for a day of fun and learning. The students are given the chance to tour the facility and visit stations throughout that engage them in business operations and topics in a game type formats. Bucyrus volunteers welcome a short distraction to educate the future workforce!

SHANGHAI AND LOGAN SITES DRIVE EDUCATION THROUGH VOLUNTEERISM AND IN-KIND SUPPORT

Team members in Shanghai continue to work with local schools to support key educational volunteer opportunities and in Logan, continue to provide in-kind support of STEM educational tools for high school students. We are proud to support innovation to all students!

GE Lighting volunteers take pride in their communities and engage in projects to continue to improve neighborhoods for residents. Our team can be found in communities where we live and work completing mass renovations on local nonprofit facilities that serve the disadvantaged, individuals with special needs and youth.

2018 marks 20 years of our Cleveland based team making great improvements to deserving nonprofits in need in Northeast Ohio like Boys & Girls Clubs, Hiram House Camp and Camp Cheerful. Generating hope, one wish at time with Make-a-Wish of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana

The ability to grant a wish for a critically ill child and their family is incredible and is the reason why GE Lighting has passionately worked selflessly for the past 20 years to support Make-a-Wish of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. The main mode of fundraising for wishes is through an annual large-scale golf outing and raffle. In the past 20 years, GE Lighting, in partnership with generous donors, in-kind partners and hole sponsors, has raised $308,000 which has granted 50 wishes in Northeast Ohio. We are proud to display the wish children and their families in our halls for all to see.

Improving Education, Income and Health in local communities through United Way

Our teams are advocates and supporter of United Way. Annually our employees contribute to the corporate campaign to support education, income and health programs in local communities. This campaign usually drives a little competition and a whole lot of fun!

Building a stronger community in Bucyrus with an Outdoor Learning Lab

GE Lighting's Bucyrus Lamp Plant and The Community Foundation for Crawford County, Ohio partnered with Buckeye Central School District to develop and build an Outdoor Learning Lab.

Logan Glass Plant Community Food Collection

Employees at our Logan, Ohio Glass Plant collected food for the local community ahead of the holiday season in 2017. The team continues to identify ways to make an immediate local impact to the Logan community.

Shanghai Volunteerism Drives Fundraising Efforts

Team members in Shanghai partnered with a local non-governmental organization in a craft making session. These crafts were then sold to generate funds to support further projects for local community members in need in Shanghai.

Since 2016, GE Lighting has been a proud partner and sole light bulb and select fixture provider for the Gary Sinise Foundation R.I.S.E. (Restoring Independence Supporting Empowerment) program. In just over two years, GE has lit twenty homes for severely wounded Veterans across the United States. Our team salutes United States Veterans and take pride in helping them build successful civilian careers, provide support to reservists and their families and support the national Veteran community where we can.
